Immigration & Visitation:
The green card, officially known as Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status in the United States, grants individuals the right to live and work indefinitely in the country.
If you are outside the U.S. for less than six months in a single trip, there are usually no issues when returning.
LPRs can apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization after a certain period of continuous residency in the U.S.:
- 3 Years: If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen and you have remained married to and living with that U.S. citizen for the entire 3-year period. This only applies to spouses of US citizens who are still living with the same US citizen spouse.
- 5 Years: If you obtained your green card through other means (e.g., employment, family sponsorship other than marriage to a U.S. citizen), you can apply for citizenship after 5 years of continuous residency.
Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens—spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents—can obtain Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status without being subject to numerical limits, often resulting in faster processing. They can apply for a green card through adjustment of status if in the U.S. or consular processing if abroad. Once granted LPR status, they can apply for U.S. citizenship after 3 years.
